Meet Abigail Docherty: Founder of Storyhouse Cambridge

Abigail Docherty founded Storyhouse Cambridge in 2023, turning a personal challenge into a dynamic new venture. After a sudden onset of visual stress left her unable to work with screens, Abi had to reinvent herself. Her solution? To channel her creativity and academic expertise into a business that helps others do the same.

Before Storyhouse, Abi was an accomplished academic and award-winning playwright. She studied and tutored at Oxford University, then designed and directed the MSt in Writing for Performance at Cambridge University, created the Harvard edX Mini Masters in Writing for Performance and Entertainment Industries, and co-led the Postgraduate Diploma in the Theory, History, and Philosophy of Creativity at Cambridge.

But Abi’s career started in the theatre, where her play Sea and Land and Sky won the Open Stage Theatre Award at the Tron Theatre, where she had been a Pearson Writer in Residence. She’s also written for The National Theatre of Scotland, Imaginate International Children's Theatre Festival and BBC Radio 4.

When her medical condition made her academic work unsustainable, Abi turned to the very academic theories she had studied and taught at the world’s top universities to reimagine her path. The result? Storyhouse Cambridge—a space dedicated to unlocking creativity for individuals and organisations alike.

“I had to keep creating, keep communicating. So I built Storyhouse. My innovation story became my purpose.”

Storyhouse Cambridge is the product of her unique blend of artistic vision, academic rigour, and personal reinvention—ready to help your people tell your organisation’s innovation story.
